# CGPA to percentage: how to convert with the 9.5 rule and why universities differ

> Job forms and college applications often ask for a percentage, but your marksheet shows a CGPA. This guide covers the CBSE 9.5 multiplier, the reverse conversion, a full lookup table, why other universities use other formulas, and how to avoid a mismatch on your application.

A **CGPA** (cumulative grade point average) is an average of grade points on a scale, usually 10 in India. A **percentage** is the share of marks you scored out of the total. The two are not the same measurement, so the conversion needs a formula, and the right formula depends on who issued your result.

> **In short**
> - For CBSE, **percentage = CGPA × 9.5**. A CGPA of 8.4 is 79.8%.
> - The reverse is **CGPA = percentage ÷ 9.5**. A 78.5% is about 8.26.
> - Other boards and universities use their own formulas, such as **(CGPA − 0.75) × 10** or a plain **× 10**. Always check the one printed by your institution.
> - If an application asks for a percentage, use your institution's official rule or certificate, not a random online formula.

## The CBSE rule: multiply by 9.5

CBSE's guidance for its 10-point scale is to multiply the CGPA by 9.5 to get an approximate percentage. The 9.5 comes from studying how grade points relate to marks across the grading bands, and it is a deliberate round figure rather than an exact one.

**Example: CGPA 8.4**

1. **Take the CGPA.** 8.4 on a 10-point scale.
2. **Multiply by 9.5.** 8.4 × 9.5 = **79.8**.
3. **Write the result.** Approximately **79.8%**.

*The reverse: 79.8 ÷ 9.5 = 8.4. This is an approximation, not the actual marks scored.*

## Lookup table

| CGPA | × 9.5 (CBSE style) | (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 6.0 | 57.0% | 52.5% |
| 6.5 | 61.75% | 57.5% |
| 7.0 | 66.5% | 62.5% |
| 7.5 | 71.25% | 67.5% |
| 8.0 | 76.0% | 72.5% |
| 8.4 | 79.8% | 76.5% |
| 8.5 | 80.75% | 77.5% |
| 9.0 | 85.5% | 82.5% |
| 9.5 | 90.25% | 87.5% |
| 10.0 | 95.0% | 92.5% |

*Two common rules give answers 3 to 4 points apart. The second formula is used by some universities, so ask yours.*

**Percentage for CGPA 6 to 10 under the 9.5 rule**

| | Percentage |
| --- | --- |
| CGPA 6.0 | 57% |
| CGPA 7.0 | 66.5% |
| CGPA 8.0 | 76% |
| CGPA 9.0 | 85.5% |
| CGPA 10.0 | 95% |

*Under the 9.5 rule even a perfect 10 converts to 95%, not 100%. That is by design.*

## Percentage back to CGPA

Divide by 9.5. A student with 78.5% has a CGPA of about 8.26. Round according to the form's instructions, usually to one or two decimals.

| Percentage | CGPA (÷ 9.5) |
| --- | --- |
| 60% | 6.32 |
| 70% | 7.37 |
| 80% | 8.42 |
| 90% | 9.47 |
| 95% | 10.00 |

*Above 95% the formula would give more than 10, which cannot exist on the scale, so such results are capped.*

## Why different institutions use different formulas

**Four common approaches you may meet**

| Box | What it means |
| --- | --- |
| CGPA × 9.5 | Used by CBSE for its 10-point scale. Widely copied by other schools. |
| (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 | Used by some universities. It treats 0.75 as a baseline offset. |
| CGPA × 10 | A rough shortcut. Simple, but overstates the result compared with the 9.5 rule. |
| Custom university tables | Some universities publish a table per grade band or a formula with a constant. Follow it exactly. |

*A grade point is an average over grading bands, not a score. Universities set their own bands, which is why no formula fits everyone.*

> **Use the official rule:** Employers, universities and scholarship panels may check against your institution's own conversion. Ask your registrar for a conversion certificate if a form needs one, and use the same figure everywhere.

## The same CGPA under three rules

**CGPA 8.4 converted three ways (%)**

| | Value |
| --- | --- |
| × 9.5 | 79.8% |
| × 10 | 84% |
| (−0.75) × 10 | 76.5% |

*A 7.5-point spread for one CGPA. This is why you should not mix formulas between applications.*

## CGPA, SGPA and GPA: what is the difference?

- **SGPA** is for one semester. It is the grade-point average of that semester's subjects, weighted by credits.
- **CGPA** is cumulative. It averages every semester so far, again weighted by credits.
- **GPA** is the general term. Many countries use a 4.0 scale, so an Indian 10-point CGPA cannot be compared to a US GPA without a conversion service.
- **Percentage** needs the total marks. CGPA hides the exact marks inside each grade band.

Weighted by credits means a 4-credit subject counts twice as much as a 2-credit one. For example, grade points 9 in a 4-credit subject and 7 in a 2-credit subject give (9 × 4 + 7 × 2) ÷ 6 = **8.33**, not the plain average of 8.

## Filling in a form correctly

1. **Read the instruction** next to the field. It may say 'percentage as per university formula'.
2. **Use your institution's rule.** If none is stated, say which one you used.
3. **Round the way you are told.** If no instruction, two decimals is safe.
4. **Keep the CGPA too** if the form has a field for it.
5. **Carry your marksheet.** Verification will use the official document.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I convert CGPA to percentage?

For CBSE's 10-point scale, multiply the CGPA by 9.5. For example, a CGPA of 8.4 is 79.8 percent. Other universities may use their own formula.

### How do I convert percentage to CGPA?

Divide the percentage by 9.5. A 78.5 percent score is about 8.26 CGPA.

### Why is 9.5 used and not 10?

The multiplier reflects the way grade points map to marks across grading bands. It gives a conservative approximation, so a CGPA of 10 converts to 95 percent.

### Is the converted percentage my actual marks?

No. It is an approximation. The actual marks scored may be higher or lower than the converted figure.

### Do all universities use the same formula?

No. Some use CGPA × 9.5, others use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, CGPA × 10 or a custom table. Use the rule published by your own institution.

### What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?

SGPA is the grade-point average of one semester, while CGPA is the cumulative average across all semesters, weighted by credits.
