# Step-up SIP: raise your SIP 10 percent a year and almost double the result

> A flat ₹10,000 SIP and one that grows 10 percent a year start in exactly the same place. Twenty years later, one has ₹1 crore and the other nearly ₹2 crore. Here is why a small yearly raise does so much.

Your salary is not the same in year ten as it was in year one. Your SIP probably should not be either. A step-up SIP raises the monthly amount by a fixed percentage every year, and over twenty years that one habit does more than a better fund ever could.

> **In short**
> - ₹10,000 a month for 20 years at 12 percent ends near **₹1 crore**. The same SIP raised 10 percent a year ends near **₹2 crore**.
> - The step-up version put in about 2.9 times the money, but ended with 2 times the corpus. The raise is the cost, the compounding is the reward.
> - Match the step-up to your salary hike. Even 5 percent a year adds about 38 percent to the final amount.

## What a step-up SIP actually is

A normal SIP invests the same amount every month, forever. A step-up (or top-up) SIP keeps the same plan but adds a fixed percentage once a year. With a 10 percent step-up, ₹10,000 becomes ₹11,000 in year two, ₹12,100 in year three, and so on. You never notice any single raise. You notice the total.

| Year | Monthly SIP at 10% step-up |
| --- | --- |
| Year 1 | ₹10,000 |
| Year 5 | ₹14,641 |
| Year 10 | ₹23,579 |
| Year 15 | ₹37,975 |
| Year 20 | ₹61,159 |

*The amount grows 10 percent every year. By year 20 the monthly SIP is about six times the first one, which is roughly what a salary growing 10 percent a year does too.*

## Same start, very different finish

All three plans below start at ₹10,000 a month and assume 12 percent a year. The only difference is the yearly raise.

**Value of the SIP over 20 years (lakh rupees)**

| Year | 10% step-up | 5% step-up | Flat SIP |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| 5 | 9.8 | 9 | 8.2 |
| 10 | 33.7 | 27.9 | 23.2 |
| 15 | 86.8 | 65.3 | 50.5 |
| 20 | 198.9 | 137.4 | 99.9 |

*For the first five years the three lines are almost one line. The gap only opens later, which is why people give up on step-ups too early.*

**After 20 years**

| | Value | Note |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Flat SIP | ₹1.0 Cr | You invested ₹24 lakh |
| 5% step-up | ₹1.37 Cr | You invested ₹39.7 lakh |
| 10% step-up | ₹1.99 Cr | You invested ₹68.7 lakh |

*Rounded from a monthly calculation at 12 percent a year. Real returns are never this smooth.*

## Where the money comes from

A bigger corpus does not only come from putting in more. It also comes from putting the bigger amounts in while the earlier money is already growing. Look at the 10 percent plan:

**Where the ₹1.99 crore comes from (10% step-up)**

| | Share |
| --- | --- |
| Money you put in | ₹68.7 L |
| Growth on top | ₹130.2 L |

*About two thirds of the final amount is growth. In the flat SIP it is about three quarters, because you put in less to begin with.*

## How big a raise is realistic

- **Tie it to your hike.** If your pay rises 8 to 10 percent, step up by about half of that. You will not feel it.
- **Start smaller than you think.** A 5 percent step-up is easier to keep than a 15 percent one you stop in year three.
- **Do it in the same month as the raise.** The new money has not become a habit yet, so it is the cheapest time to redirect it.
- **Review once a year, not every month.** Step-ups work because they run on their own.

> **A fair warning:** These numbers assume a steady 12 percent. Markets do not do that. Some years are negative. The point of the comparison is the **gap between plans**, which stays real even when the absolute numbers change.

## Step-up versus a bigger starting SIP

If you could afford more at the start, you should start higher. But most people cannot, and the step-up is how a modest start still reaches a large number. A flat ₹20,000 SIP reaches about ₹2 crore too, but it needs you to find that money on day one.

**Two ways to reach about ₹2 crore in 20 years**

| Flat SIP | Step-up SIP |
| --- | --- |
| ₹20,000 / month | ₹10,000 + 10% a year |
| Needs the full amount from month one | Starts at half the amount |
| Invests ₹48 lakh in total | Invests about ₹69 lakh in total |

*The step-up asks less at the start and more later, when your income is higher.*

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a step-up SIP?

A SIP whose monthly amount rises by a fixed percentage every year, for example 10 percent. It lets your investments grow along with your income.

### How much does a 10 percent step-up add?

In this example, ₹10,000 a month for 20 years at 12 percent gives about ₹1 crore flat, and about ₹1.99 crore with a 10 percent yearly step-up.

### Is a step-up SIP better than a normal SIP?

If your income rises over time, usually yes, because it keeps your investing in step with your earnings. It is not a way to earn a higher return, only a way to invest more over time.

### What step-up percentage should I choose?

A common choice is 5 to 10 percent, tied to your salary growth. Choose a number you can keep for many years rather than a big one you stop.

### Are these returns guaranteed?

No. The 12 percent a year is an assumption for illustration. Actual market returns vary and can be negative in some years.
