A countdown turns a date on the calendar into a number you can plan with. 'In three months' is vague. '84 days, 12 weeks, 60 working days' is something you can divide into tasks. The calculation is a date subtraction, but the details, such as whether today counts, change the answer by one day.
How the count works
- 1Take today's date9 October 2026, at the start of the day.
- 2Take the target date1 January 2027.
- 3Subtract and count whole days22 left in October + 30 in November + 31 in December + 1 = **84 days**.
- 4Convert84 ÷ 7 = **12.0 weeks**, 84 ÷ 30.44 = **2.8 months**, 84 × 24 = **2,016 hours**.
The tool shows days left (or days passed, if the date is behind you), weeks, approximate months, hours and the weekday of the target.
Counting to well-known dates from 9 October 2026
| Date | Day | Weekday | Days left | Weeks left |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Christmas Day | 25 December | Friday | 77 | 11.0 |
| New Year's Day | 1 January | Friday | 84 | 12.0 |
| Republic Day | 26 January | Tuesday | 109 | 15.6 |
| End of the financial year | 31 March | Wednesday | 173 | 24.7 |
| Independence Day | 15 August | Sunday | 310 | 44.3 |
Counted on 9 October 2026, the date this guide was written. The tool counts from the date on your own device, so your numbers change every day.
Counted in whole calendar days. Add or remove a day if your rule counts the last day too.
Is today counted?
This is the main source of off-by-one disagreements. The tool counts the number of midnights between today and the target, so tomorrow is 1 day away and today is 0. In a legal or contractual notice period, the rule may count differently, for example 'within 30 days of receipt', where the first day may or may not be counted. Check the wording of your own document.
Weeks and months are not the same size
- A week is always 7 days, so weeks are exact: 84 days is 12 weeks.
- A month is 28 to 31 days. The tool divides by an average of 30.44 days, so '2.8 months' is an estimate.
- Counting by calendar months from 9 October to 1 January gives 2 months and 23 days, which is a different way to say the same 84 days.
Calendar days against working days
For planning work, calendar days overstate the time you have. Of the 84 days to 1 January, only about 60 are weekdays, and holidays reduce that further. Use the Working Days Calculator when you need a deadline in business days.
Weekday counts vary by the day you start. Subtract public holidays and leave days for your own total.
Planning backwards from the date
- Count the days left to the date with the calculator.
- Convert to weeks and subtract the weeks you cannot work, such as travel or festivals.
- Split the remaining weeks into phases, for example learn, practise and revise for an exam.
- Set a milestone date at about the halfway point to check progress.
- Add a buffer of at least 10% of the time, because things always take longer than planned.
- Weeks 1 to 6Learn the material or build the main part of the work.
- Weeks 7 to 10Practise or test, and fix the weak spots.
- Weeks 11 to 12Revise, finish and keep the last days free as a buffer.
A rough split like this works for many projects. Adjust the weeks to the size of the job.
Questions people ask
How do I calculate the number of days until a date?
Subtract today's date from the target date and count the whole days between them. For example, from 9 October 2026 to 1 January 2027 is 84 days.
Does the calculator count today?
No. It counts the days from the start of today, so tomorrow is 1 day away and today is 0. If the target is today, it shows Today.
How many weeks are there until a date?
Divide the number of days by 7. Eighty-four days is exactly 12 weeks.
Why are the months approximate?
Calendar months have 28 to 31 days. The tool divides the days by an average month length of 30.44, so the number of months is an estimate.
What if the date has already passed?
The tool shows the number of days passed instead of days left, with the same weeks, months and hours for the gap.
Does it count working days?
No. It counts calendar days. For weekdays only, use the Working Days Calculator, and subtract any holidays that apply to you.
